This is an acceptable risk for us, and it allows us to take care of other things instead of worrying about complex RAID setups. The first thing you have to do is install Cloud Station from the Packages Manager to activate it on your Synology. Of course, there are disadvantages, too.
When you opt for a private-cloud storage solution, you have to manage everything on your own. We can determine exactly who sees what in our network, and file sharing is very easy. Huge drawback is the space used by diskstation. The main reason is to get a common repository for data. How ever when the data grows the diskstation sync to the computer instead of fetching the data when you need it.
The result is that a phone or a laptop will run out of space.
If you use this with common laptops with say GB SSD you will very fast start to have problems in a large scale as the synology diskstation fills up the SSD. You can opt out of syncing certain folders, but this give you a new problem as you sometimes need access to the files. That is correct, however this is exactly what dropbox does as well.
The reason for the data to be stored on your local machine is for you to be able to access it quicker if it is a larger file, as well as off-line use. If the data was not pre-downloaded then you are out of luck when you have no internet connection. Well … this is not the only way to use the Synology NAS, although a very practical one when you have enough space on your local disk.
The other way is elegant. Finally I can manage my own cloud as I want. Surely they have to work hard to improve this solution for example, I cannot decide to move only metadata on local disk, so the space on local disk and on cloud is the same but I found cloudstation very good for me.

The goal is to provide offline access to the last version of the files. Changes made on the various clients will be sorted by date and time, so that the last edited version will always be the active one, while Cloud Station Server saves up to 32 older versions of each file. So if you edit the same file while you are offline, on two different clients, they will be synchronized when you go online again, and the version saved last, will become active on both clients.

You also have access to your cloud with DS cloud from smartphones or tablets.I've read some mixed reviews about Drive not quite doing the same things particularly it not actually syncing onto mobile devicesand it makes me nervous to update.
Wondering what users here are doing and what their experiences have been with Drive. Like jefflambert I experienced issues with CloudStation long ago and left for Resilio Sync for a while. Then I came back and CloudStation was and is blissful. Drive is a much broader product, encompassing not just the syncing from CloudStation, but also web-based file management for Office, similar for Moments, etc.
The syncing part of Drive, however, is essentially unchanged from CloudStation. The app name changed on my Mac, but the functionality has remained exactly the same for me.
It works perfectly. I had tried Cloudstation at one point and did not find it stable at all, so I had just removed it. I tried Drive recently and it seemed to work better but I have not really tested it that much. I would say though, if Cloudstation is working perfectly for you, don't change what's working man!
One of the reasons I got GB iPad pro is to sync that data and have it local, even when I'm not connected. It seems that the Drive mobile client no longer does that I always found that "sync all the folders I touch" thing about the iOS version of Cloud Station quite strange. Dropbox doesn't do this it only syncs those you specifyand really is counter to the way everything else in iOS works. So when Drive came out, I thought that paradigm made sense. I can set specific files to be favorites or to save offline, but generally-speaking it doesn't start downloading everything by default.
That's a long way of answering your question in the affirmative: yes, Drive does not sync everything. Yea, unfortunately for me, I actually want it to sync everything I also wish it integrated into the FIles. Seems like 2-steps backward for my needs at this point. I hear you, john-kheit.
I'm hoping they continue development on Drive and make it fully integrated into Files and not just the modal "it works" solution that exists today. Tdotplay Think of Drive as Dropbox, but instead of synching on the cloud, it syncs with your Synology.
